Most artists and cultural agencies today live under pressure defined not only by output, but by timing. In an age of saturation, where images, ideas, and actions compete for attention in real time, the drive to be of one’s time has become a crucial requirement. Responding to political, social, or aesthetic developments, contemporary cultural production is often guided—if not governed—by the need to act and communicate at the right moment. Yet timing is not simply a condition of contemporary cultural production. It can also become a strategy, a constraint, a subject, or a material of artistic practice.
Perfect Timing? was conceived as a three-month course for artists interested in expanding the possibilities of their chosen media. Led by Portuguese visual artist Francisco Tropa, American curator and art historian Kathleen Campagnolo, and French writer and curator Alexis Vaillant, the course brought together critical theory, technical development, and creative experimentation. Tropa developed a series of assignments in which students were asked to make works under the titles Feed Me!, Am I sensitive enough about what is happening in the world?, and Do I have a big ego? Each proposed a different relationship between the artist, the work, and its viewer. Campagnolo explored pivotal moments in recent art history, time-based practices, and the circumstances in which artworks are encountered, while Vaillant considered how “perfect timing” shapes our relationship to images in a saturated world.
Through case studies, recent texts, exhibition visits, workshops, and evolving to-do lists, the group explored the tensions between spontaneity and calculation, intuition and strategy, urgency and hesitation. Each student developed new work while also learning to look closely at, discuss, and respond to the work of others.
This exhibition brings together the results of that process. It is also a moment to pause and consider what has been made, what is still in progress, and what might happen next.

Tropa desenvolveu uma série de exercícios em que os estudantes foram convidados a realizar trabalhos a partir dos títulos Feed Me!, Am I sensitive enough about what is happening in the world? e Do I have a big ego?
